INTERNATIONAL SALON OF PHOTOGRAPHY 2009
RULES
AND REGULATIONS
The Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association (the Association) cordially invites you and photographers from all parts of the world to honour with your photographic creations the 42nd E.A. International Salon of Photography 2009 (the Salon) to be held on July 1-13, 2009 in the Exhibition Gallery 1-5 of the state-of-the-art, Hong Kong Central Library, Ground Floor, 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong S.A.R.
The Salon is considered as one of the best photographic exhibitions in the world. Each division shall be adjudicated by a panel of nine judges (the Judging Panel) , most of whom have been honoured with the Top Ten Exhibitors in previous PSA Who¡¦s Who listings and awarded Fellow members of various renowned photographic society. Recognition and patronage have been granted by the Photographic Society of America (the PSA), the International Federation of Photographic Art (the FIAP) and the Royal Photographic Society (the RPS).
Photographers worldwide are invited to sumit their works (monochrome prints (open), colour prints (open) , colour prints (sports and dynamics) colour projected images (slides only) and colour digital images ) in the year 2009 to win our 140 medals and awards, including the PSA, the FIAP and the RPS medals as well as the HM ribbons. Every entrant will also be entitled to a copy of the colour 20.5 cm x 26.5 cm Salon Catalogue (about 50 pages) and subject to payment of US$15.00 or Eur £á15.00 to cover postage and handling, the 20.5 cm x 26.5 cm Exhibitors¡¦ Annual in hard cover (about 120 pages) published by the Association, which are amongst others the most remarkable collections for photographic enthusiasts.
The Salon is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the Association, in its reasonable discretion, believes that the entry does not conform to the following exhibition rules and regulations:
- The Salon is held in conformity with the exhibition standards rules and regulations of the PSA, the FIAP, the RPS and the Association. The acceptance lists shall be submitted to the PSA for Who¡¦s Who listings and Star Ratings; and to the FIAP distinctions and to the RPS. *** Note : For the sake of consistency, Entry Form must be completed in BLOCK LETTERS.
- Entries by the Council Members of the Association or the Members of the Judging Panel for the Salon are prohibited.
- Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his own and permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website. The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright. Images may be altered, either electronically or otherwise, by the maker and artwork or computer graphics created by the entrant may be incorporated if the photographic content predominates subject to divisional restrictions. All final work must be on photographic film, or on electronic file, or on photographic or electronic print material, mounting excepted.
- An entrant may enter any or all of the five divisions namely Colour Digital Images (Open), Monochrome Prints (Open), Colour Prints (Open) , Colour Prints (Sports and Dynamics) and Colour Projected Images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits), subject to a maximum of four images for each of the divisions. An image that has been accepted in any previous E.A. International Salon, or a like ¡§in camera¡¨ duplicate of that image may not be re-entered in the same format in the same division regardless of its title. The decision of the Judging Panel in these respects shall be final.
- Colour Digital Images (Open), Monochrome Prints (Open), Colour Prints (Open) , Colour Prints (Sports and Dynamics) and Colour Projected Images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits), shall be adjudicated under five separate divisions. Prints, Colour Projected Images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits) and Colour Digital Images accepted in any previous E.A. International Salons, regardless of title, are ineligible for the same division.
- A separate entry form must be used for each division.
- Foreign entries if mounted or sent with over-sized hard containers exceeding 90 cm in length, width and depth combined or weighing more than 2 kg will not be returned in accordance with local postal regulations for ¡§printed matter¡¨ mails unless an extra return postage of US$30.00 or Eur £á30.00 for surface mail is included.
- An entrant¡¦s four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging. Each division is adjudicated by a panel of seven reputable photographers. Colour Digital Images (Open) judging will be done by projecting images on a screen with an Electronic Projector at a resolution of 1024 (width) x 768 (height) pixels. The decisions of the judges are final and without appeal.
- The Association, its salon committee, members and operating units will exercise due care in handling of all materials submitted, but they assume no liability for any loss or damage to any entries or related material. Compensation in any form will not be entertained.
- Unless otherwise specified, the Association and the salon committee reserve the right to reproduce any of the entries in the press, Exhibitors Annual, website and Salon Catalogue without payment in any form.
- Submission of an entry signifies acceptance of rules and regulations by an entrant.

The submission of entries signifies acceptance of these conditions¡G
¡» Colour Digital Images Division (Open)¡G
D1. No Colour Projected Images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits) shall be allowed in this division.
D2. Submission via email shall NOT be accepted. Digital images must be submitted in a CD-ROM and sent by post to the Salon Chairman. The name of participant, file number, title and file name of the submitted images must correspond with the same information submitted in the entry form. The organizer will not be held responsible for computer errors in reading the images.
D3. Digital Image Files: The maximum size of each digital image, regardless of portrait or landscape orientation, should not exceed 1024 (width) x 768 (height) pixels with a resolution of 72 dpi in compressed jpeg/jpg file format. The file size of each image should not exceed 1 MB. Together with the submitted entries, an additional folder entitled ¡§HIGH¡¨ should be included which must contain the same images of the submitted entries in high resolution (20 MB per image, jpeg/jpg file format) for purpose of printing of Salon Catalogue should any of the submitted entry is selected. The entries will not be compresed and further processed (e.g. rotation) by our Committee. If the entries violate the standard established by the Committee, the application may be rejected by the Selection Committee.
D4. Naming of Image Files: The English spelling name of the participant should be used for naming the submitted images, followed by a sequential number of d1 to d4 for each of the images. Each group of characters in the file name should be linked by a hyphen ¡§-¡§. DO NOT use the Image Title for file name. For example: Name of participant : David Dawson Name of images should be : david-dawson-d1.jpg¡Fdavid-dawson-d2.jpg¡Fand the likes.
D5. Participant¡¦s name and country belonged to must be written on the surface of the CD-ROM submitted.
D6. Colour digital images must not be submitted in the same package with prints.
D7. Neither image files nor CD-ROM containing such will be returned.
¡» Monochrome Prints (Open) , Colour Prints (Open) and Colour Prints (Sports and Dynamics) division¡G
P1. Prints should be at least 28 cm x 35 cm (11 in x 14 in) but should not exceed 40 cm x 50 cm (16 in x 20 in) and must be unmounted. Number and title of print, maker¡¦s name and address, corresponding with the entry form, must be on the back of each print. No title or identification of the maker shall be written anywhere on the face side of any print.
P2. A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (Black) to the very clear grey (White) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category.
P3.. Colour prints (Sports and Dynamics) division, ¡§Sport and Dynamics¡¨ may be defined to show all kinds of sports, movement and action: the speed, the power and the dramatics of sports, and anything that is moving, or the use of the possibilities of photography to suggest movement. Prints may present movement and speed to the viewers, for example by moving the camera or by using long time exposures. Everything that moves is in the centre of interest. Also concentrate on sports and action shots.
¡» Colour Projected Images Division (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits)¡G
S1. Only Colour Projected Images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits) are accepted, and no digital files shall be allowed in this division.
S2. ¡§Scapes¡¨ can be land, sea, lake, mountains, waters, sky, city, country, architecture¡Kect.
S3. Colour Projected Images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits) must be in 5 cm x 5 cm (2 in x 2 in) mounts. Each colour projected images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits)must bear the name and address of the maker, title and number, corresponding with those on the entry form, and must be clearly spotted in the lower left-hand corner, as hand viewed in an upright position on the non-gelatin layer side. Colour Projected Images (Slides Only ¡V Scaps & Portraits) may be sent by registered mail together with the entry form and fee, but must not be sent in the same package with prints.

Note:
(a). To encourage overseas group entries of five or more participants using one single mail address for notification of results, return of entries and salon catalogues, each participant will receive a discount of US$2.00 or Eur £á2.00 in the above entry fees. The above entry fee (for notification of results, a salon catalogue and return postage) should be enclosed with the entry form and sent separately from prints.
(b). If return by air mail is required, an amount of US$20.00 or Eur £á20.00 for postage must be added.
(c). Overseas entrant making payments by bank draft must add US$30.00 or Eur £á30.00 for banker¡¦s handling charges.
(d). Bank drafts should be made payable to: The Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association. Bank drafts drawn on a bank outside Hong Kong S.A.R. will not be accepted.
(e). In case of foreign exchange difficulties, 40 International Reply Coupons (surface-mail) or 106 International Reply Coupons (air-mail) for each section must be enclosed to take the place of the entry fee.
(f). Exemption of entry fee will be granted to the E.A.Members of Hong Kong S.A.R. and Macau S.A.R. if entries are submitted and collected by members themselves.
(g). Entry without the appropriate fee enclosed shall not be adjudicated nor returned.
