In the early Sixties, a group of photographers, who were enthusiastic salon exhibitors, initiated the founding a photographic club. Their goals were to host international salons and to assist fellow photographers to participate in salons world-wide. Headed by Dr. WU K. H., the group included Dr. SZETO O., Dr. WU Hung-tak, Mr. WAI Kin-chiu, Mr. CHEW Kam-chiu, Mr. CHAN Shau-u, and Mr. CHANG P. G. They applied for registration in Hong Kong Government to form the Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association on December 19, 1963.
The Association welcomes any zealous photographer to apply for membership regardless of his race, nationality, country of origin and sex. It also welcomes all who wish to participate in its annual photographic exhibition (please refer to this year's Entry Form of the E.A. International Salon of Photography for details).

They applied for registration in Hong Kong Government to form the Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association on December 19, 1963.

The first Executive Committee was led by Dr. WU K. H. as President, while Dr. SZETO O. and Mr. CHEW Kam-chiu were elected Vice-presidents in 1965. In order to encourage members to fourish in international salon competitions, and for those who had already achieved exceptional excellence, "Top Ten" certificates were awarded.

In 1965-1967, invitations were extended to world-renowned photographers for exhibitions. Their best prints were published in a professionally designed hard-cover album, the Exhibitors' Annual.

The first international exhibition was held by the Association in 1968. Since then, the contents of the Exhibitors' Annual have included selected prints from the exhibition and articles written by well-qualified artists on photographic techniques. For more than 40 years, the Annual has illustrated the styles and historical trends in the evolution of salon photography, and served as a review of photographic history.

Since 1969, the Association has been awarding distinctions and honours to various members who have achieved outstanding performance in salon competitions, and to those who have made excellent contribution to the Association.

Since 1965, apart from the international exhibition which is held yearly, the Association has organized or co-operated various activities, in the forms of photographic seminars and exhibitions. With allied photographic societies, local and aboard. In the year 1996, 198 members participated in a great venture, the PHOTO-GEMS, which published the best works of our members in 380 prints.

In 1999, the Association together with the Photographic Society of America (PSA), organized an exhibition showing the most representative works of the Photographic Society of America (PSA) members in Hong Kong and Macau. These prints were recorded in an album ¡§PSA¡¦s Best of Hong Kong & Macau 1999¡¨ and reproduced into slides, both were presented to the PSA Annual Conference held in Toronto, Canada in September 1999.

Our fellow members have gladly achieved substantial merits in various international photographic competitions. According to the statistics of the Photographic Society of America (PSA), they have attained most of the ¡¥Top Ten¡¦ position in the Who¡¦s Who in Photography, as ranked by the Photographic Society of America (PSA), in both monochrome and colour print divisions in the past decades. Two-third of the ¡¥Top Ten¡¦, and in particular, most of the best exhibitors are our members.

Our Association is registered as a non-profit organization. The yearly international photographic salon we organize is divided into three pictorial divisions, the monochrome prints, colour print and colour slide. Each division is adjudicated by a panel of nine reputable photographers. Judging order: an entrant¡¦s four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging. Every year, hundreds of participants send their works to us from all parts of the world. The standard of this annual event is highly recognized by authorities such as the The International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) and the Photographic Society of America (PSA).
All participants will receive a salon catalogue which depicts about 30 monochrome and colour prints. Moreover the ¡§Exhibitors Annual¡¨ which contains about 130 prints in 150 pages is most attractive, and is regarded by many as collectors¡¦s item.

Regardless of their races, nationalities and sex, the Association welcomes all zealous photographers to join our membership and to participate in our annual photographic event for exhibition.

The Association has been hosting international salons for more than thirty years. It has been widely taken as one of the best organizations in the salon arena. Its members have fared very well in international salons, especially in both monochrome and colour print divisions of the pictorial section. According to the "Who's Who" Lists compiled by The Photographic Society of America, since 1952, most of the "Top Ten" exhibitors (in particular the best exhibitor) have been members of the Association. The Association has now more than 170 "Top Ten" exhibitors and other members who are content to distinguish themselves solely on the improvement of their photographic skills, without taking part in international salons.

An Organizing Committee of " Vision Beyond " was formed by the Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association. This Organizing Committee jointly organized a photographic exhibition, Hong Kong Art Photography ( 1900 - 2000 ), with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong. The Exhibition which consisted of 813 photographic works from 431 photographers was held in the Hong Kong Heritage Museum for a period of six months with effect from 7th December, 2001.All exhibits would be kept as permanent collection by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum after the Exhibition and were used to publish a set of " Vision Beyond - Hong Kong Art Photography 1900 -2000 " in 4 volumes. The Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition was attended by leaders of well-known photographic organizations/societies and famous photographers all over the world, including the Presidents of the Royal Photographic Society, the Photographic Society of America and the International Federation of Photographic Art, the Chairman of the Chinese Photographers Association, etc. This event is now considered as a landmark of the Photographic History of Hong Kong.

The Exhibitors' Annual published by the Association yearly has received acclaims from the International Federation of Photographic Art, the Photographic Society of America, the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, many photograhic societies/organizations and photography-lovers all over the world.
